Mametz Wood

Mametz Wood

‘’...stood, locked together by their bayonets
which had pierced one another’s bodies
and sustained in that position by the tree trunk
against which they had fallen. ‘’

Captain Gerald Brenan MC
Mametz Wood, The Somme, 16th July 1916

Iron helmeted gladiators, immortalised in their final fear
Calcified against the barked referee, embraced by it’s shattered limbs
A war statue, welded together with thrusted steel
An epitaph never to grace a Town Square, unveiled with civic pomp

But, eternally as one, in a forgotten woods, dappled with neutral light
That blessed their dying words, in a different language

Harry Mills : 2 January 2012
